When people picture yachting, they often imagine the glamorous side, luxury service, and adventures across the globe. But those of us who have lived it know there’s another side to yacht life: the unspoken rules that shape crew culture. These aren’t found in a contract or taught in training schools. They’re learned through experience, through long seasons at sea, and through the unique bond that comes with living and working together 24/7.
Here are some of the unspoken rules I’ve come to live by during my 12+ years in the industry (and now working with Seven Seas Recruitment, helping crew and yachts find the right fit):
1. Respect the Hierarchy, Respect the Team
Every yacht has its hierarchy, and while it may feel rigid at times, it exists for a reason. Respecting the chain of command is non-negotiable but that doesn’t mean you can’t respect your peers equally. A successful yacht runs when everyone pulls their weight, regardless of title.
2. Discretion is Everything
What happens on board, stays on board. You’ll work for high-profile owners and guests, and trust is the most valuable currency. Discretion isn’t just professional it’s essential to your longevity in this industry.
3. Pull Your Weight (and Then Some)
Life on board means you’re part of a small team in a confined space. Everyone notices who is putting in the effort and who isn’t. Going the extra mile not only supports your team but also builds your reputation across the industry.
4. Cabin Etiquette Matters
It may sound small, but how you treat your cabin can affect how others see you. Respect your cabin mate’s space, keep things tidy, and remember your cabin is their home too.
5. Positivity is Contagious
A positive attitude goes further than you think. Long charters, back-to-back guest trips, and challenging personalities are part of the job. The crew who can remain upbeat, adaptable, and solution-oriented will always stand out.
6. The Social Balance
Yes, you’ll share amazing nights out with your crew, but know your limits. How you behave on a night off often follows you back on board. Professionalism doesn’t end when you step off the passerelle.
7. Always Be Willing to Learn
Even after years in the industry, there’s always something new to learn. Stay open to advice, training, and feedback — whether it’s from a Chief Stew, Bosun, or even a junior crew member who’s mastered a task you haven’t. Humility and growth go hand in hand.
8. Your Reputation Travels Faster Than You Do
The yachting industry is incredibly small. Word spreads quickly, and your name often arrives before you do. Protect your reputation by being reliable, respectful, and professional on every job.
Final Thoughts
Yachting is more than just a career; it’s a lifestyle built on teamwork, trust, and respect. The unspoken rules of yacht crew culture aren’t there to restrict you they’re there to help you thrive in one of the most demanding yet rewarding industries in the world.
After 12 years, I can honestly say it’s these little lessons, lived day-to-day, that shape great crew and lasting careers.
